Before the earthquake: "Angel of the Seas" Bharati Prasad, VU4RBI, operates a ham radio demonstration at the Science Center near Port Blair, Andaman Island, on December 22 to introduce Amateur Radio to local navy cadets. Post-quake contact between Andaman and Nicobar islands is maintained by two groups of hams who participated in the DXpedition, who are relaying traffic to and from respective authorities and relief groups. ★Subject: [DX-NEWS] VU4 news Dec 31 0300Z From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Fri, 31 Dec 2004 03:54:34 +0000 QST at 0300 Z on Dec 31 1. VU4RBI continues to operate from Port Blair Sinclairs Hotel with emergency messages, but no DX calls can now be taken. Bharathi is going to use her regularly scheduled departure ticked on its original date... the best way to get an airline seat...on Jan. 1, 2005. 2. Other VU operators will remain on the Islands and continue the emergency traffic for as long as it takes. More VU operators are traveling to Andaman to help out soon. 3. One of the VU4NRO stations is dispatched to one of the hardest hit NicobarIslands and is relaying out emergency traffic from that devastated place. 4. The other NRO station is again operational in the college dorm. They also are pass- ing emergency traffic. 5. Around 0400 Z/UTC today Dec. 31, NRO will transmit slow scan TV pictures on 14.190 +-. These are photos from around the Islands and affected areas there. Any station is free to tune in and copy these TV pictures. 6. Let me again be clear about my status re VU4.... I served as a helper on this DXpedi- tion and at all times tried to be sure it was an INDIA effort, not some foreigner's. That same fact prevailed as soon as the earthquake hit...that is, I helped and obverv- ed, and took photos. It was clear from the time just after the quake onward that the INDIA hams had the situation completely handled and were immediately effective as emergency communicators. Further, these India operators speak the local languages, which I do not, further reason for me to only be an observer. I took my regularly scheduled air ticket date to depart Andaman... the only way I could get a ticket and reasoned that I could relay whatever Andaman traffic from my HS0ZCW station. That I did and continue to do. 7. Feel free to give my Thailand telephone number to anyone who wants it... 66-5-046-1922. Hams all over the affected area in multiple countries are stepping in and helping. It is a very gratifying international effort by hundreds of volunteer hams. I am proud of ham radio, again, today. ★Subject: VU4 report Dec 29 at 1330Z From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2004 15:21:20 +0000 Hello DXers: I am now reporting from Samut Sakhon, Thailand, about 50 miles south south west of Bang- kok. Shades of antenna restrictions.... I got back to my place in Bangkok only to have had my dipole taken down from the roof of the condo .... someone complained and I was not here to refute... and just when I need it... gotta talk to the powers now. 2. There is a POSSIBILITY of more VU4 permits coming to new India hams in the next few days. Do not know if the quake will slow that process down, but there is some hope that more operators will travel to vu4 and continue the activation. Stay tuned. 3. I hope to get back on the air here in HS and get direct info via ham radio.... will report then. ★Subject: [DX-NEWS] All OK in VU4 land !!! From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Mon, 27 Dec 2004 23:44:21 +0000 Hello DXers... Dec. 27 at 2300Z Hey, a whole lotta shakin' goin' on. Sorry to be out of touch for a while, but the phone service and thus email service went out with the first quake on Andaman, VU4. This is my first minute to get to a reliable email service. 1. Morning after Xmas, I was resting from sleep and thinking about what to do that coming day when my bed started to quiver like a large train was coming by. Then, the room started to rock about when I stood up. Walking and standing were difficult, bottles were faling off the shelves, and my fifth floor room floor felt like rubber. I got braced within the bathroom door until things settled down. Then, I found my pants and shirt and ran, shoes in hand, down the stairs and joined everyone else from the hotel in the open out front. Bharathi was already safely outside there. She was on the air at the time, but quickly figured out what was hapening and got out. 2. There were extra holiday guests at the hotel. Various groups formed, and I sat with some English speakers at a table in the hotel garden. I noted to all who would listen that a BIG WAVE would come with an ocean quake. We were, by then, drinking tea and looking down on the ocean from about 80 feet above high tide. The sea rapid- ly turned brown near us, but there was no real surge. As the day went on and 8 to 10 more small tremors came and went, several of us took quick runs to our rooms to get necessities. The radios were left in the room. The roof antennas showed no signs of damage at all. 3. As the other team members came to our hotel, we learned of the big wave that hit the water front in Port Blair. Saraha had taken some videos there with the water still about a foot deep over the street that fronted the ocean. All team members were very OK. 4. In the immediate Port Blair area, four people died (one from landing on his head as he dove out his home window seeking escape), the local newspaper reported. 5. Port Blair and all but 4 of its citizens escaped serious damage. Most of you have now seen the video of the real damage that occurred in other places around the Indian Ocean rim... very bad for people and property. 6. By that afternoon, the team had set up one rig outside with a mobile whip and tuner... powered by the Hotel generator... and Bharathi was taking health and welfare messages from the people standing around there. Many wanted to tell relatives on the Indian mainland that they were ok, and Bharathi established contact with many India ham stations in various cities as needed. Traffic was being passed. She told my wife in Thailand that I was ok via contact with an HS station who passed the message by tele- phone in Thailand.... very nice to be a ham ! 7. The team got cots from the hotel and, along with most others, slept out in the open that night. I slept fitfully near the lobby door on a couch inside, reasoning rightly this time, that the worst was over. 8. I will have more reports later, but the main news for ham radio is THE TEAM IS COMPL- ETELY OK AND SAFE. They have suspended normal DXpedition operations while helping out with health and welfare messages and whatever other duties may have come to them after I departed Port Blair vy early this morning (as I was originally scheduled to do). I suspect they will go back to DXpedition work soon because Port Blair escaped the worst damage and the after shocks apparantly have also stopped. Thanks for all the good wishes. VU4 time = UTC + 5h30m. ★Subject: [DX-NEWS] VU4 Conditions Date: Sun, 26 Dec 2004 18:20:09 +0800 From: Alek Petkovic <vk6apkあeon.net.au> I'm listening to VU4RBI on 14.193 (1000 UTC) and the news is that there is now electri- city or telephone communication there at this time. Hope it is a contact or two with VU4 !!! The team continues to try with all their might and stamina. Bharathi's eyes are now slits, but she hammers on and on. Saraha and the other guys took me to the best India dinner I have ever had this noon.... I can't name the dishes, but I want some more.... tomorrow. 1. About 40 meters....2 of the stations have 40 m antennas including trap verts, inverted Vees, and regualr dipoles. Sarah's station had its 40 m dipole repositioned for N/S radiation and they are going to put much effort on 40m for this week. 7.004 + or- CW ..... NA SSB, I am told, is just impossible due to foreign b'cast in the American phone band. I tried tuning around there in the middle of the night and it was wall- to-wall 40 over and more... nary a crack to hope to hear ham sigs in that mess. Andaman has a transmitter on 7.115, for example. 1.1 Yes, they are on 80 CW and 160m .... dipoles.... don't stop listening for them./ 2. Saraha is doing RTTY and PSK from time to time. 3. The Cushcraft WARC yagi turns out to be the best antenna performer we have here.... It is on top of a flat roof of a 4 story dorm bldg. WARC is getting lots of play this week.... there is some doubt about 30 meters amoung the team.... I personally do not know its status but see an op working there. 4. I have repeatedly advised the team two items.... point the beams North (not easily turned) and WORK FROM 1000 Z TO 1400 Z for North America. Can't tell u how many times I have relayed that message. 5. The 15m band pass filter arrived here on Xmas eve.... BIG thanks to NN6EE for having the thoughtfullness to send it good old U. S. Post Air Mail Parcel. Great delivery directly to this hotel. I paid $31.00 duty on it and it will go into service this hour. And to all: much calling and working VU4 and to all a good night !!!! Yes, the team and I are looking forward to celebrating New Year early on Dec. 25 here on VU4. The team will be on the air all that day, as usual, with the closing date of Dec. 31, 2004. VU2RBI asked for a three month VU4 permission and was granted one month...December. So, those wondering why was the operation put together so fast.... the answer is they had no choice. December was the month awarded/permitted by the India government. They got everything together in 15 days from the permit arrival to their arrival on VU4. The reason gear and some antennas could be put together so fast is due to the advance planning of VU2MY and the National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR) of India. That organization has packed and ready four HF stations in cases, just standing by for an emergency use (or a DXpedition). They grabbed the cases and got on the BOAT from Chennai to Andaman I. The team has now passed the 30,000 QSO mark and has mounted HF signals on SSB, CW, Slo- scan TV, RTTY, and PSK on all bands --including all 3 WARC -- from 160 thru 6 meters. We are today making better the 80 antennas.. too much slope on the "Vs".. and re-string- ing the 160 dipole. There is a slim chance of getting permission to load up an unused 250 ft tower on 160.... gonna try. I told the team abt no PSK/RTTY above 14.150. Thanks. VU2MY and I have done several talks here about ham radio to students and general public and he was on the commercial radio program last night. India is learning about this effort !!! Bharathi sends to all her profound thanks for all hams who wrote letters and emails to ask for this DXpedition. The some over 200 messages of appeal did the final trick in convincing the authorities to grant permission. Bharathi and all send BIG Holliday Thanks to all.... 73 VU3CHE is Charles Harpole <k4vudあhotmail.com> --(12月22日)------------------------------------------------------------------------- 本チームは、その後もアクティブに運用していますが、私は欲しいバンドでは苦労しています。 ★Subject: Re: [DX-NEWS] VU4 0630Z Dec21 From: N4KGあaol.com Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2004 07:40:17 EST My understanding is that 30M is (was) not authorized in India. HOWEVER, in year 2000, India granted a 6 month 'trial' or 'temporary authorization' for 30 and 6 meter operation. After the first trial, there were apparently NO problems so the government reissued the temporary authorization at least two more times that I am aware of, maybe more. Today's news from Andaman: 1. Mr. Suri, VU2MY, head of NIAR, has arrived here and is arranging for publicity for the op all over India. He is cheering the operators on and giving them lots of encouragem- ent to stay awake and keep the bands hot with their calls !!! 2. We have a PSK station on the air from time to time and it has made over 100 contacts. 3. Saraha the computer whiz of the group, has also activated the slow-scan TV station and yesterday made the first two contacts... one to India and one to Japan. 4. I got some great interviews with many of the gang here on video. Also I have video of operations in action and antennas, etc. Bharathi's CW station got into the audio in my video camera and I will have to do those shots again. Thee is a lot of FR flying around here. Bharathi today claimed that she could feel RF on the genuine gold threads in her sari (dress), so she changed into a simpler sari. 5. Everyone is determined to continue to give "that first new one" to as many ops as possi- ble. This is our first and main goal. However, in the last two weeks we will activate more on 40 (YES we do know about splits into the American phone bands) and get 80 working too then. 6. Bharathi's station is in the Hotel Sinclairs. Saraha's op location is in a dorm room of a local college (vy spartan room... we just got him a mattress for the wood bed yesterday and he is getting spoiled). Ram's location was in a rented room in a small apt. bldg. but now he has moved to the Port Blair Science Center where the public can watch the ham radio action. In the rented room, he worked on a mat on the floor.... it was quite something to see the most advanced electronics working from the floor of a bare room .... Best of luck to all callers and be patient and stay the course.... 73 Charles Harpole <k4vudあhotmail.com> --(12月18日-1)----------------------------------------------------------------------- K4VUD からのEメール: 此の DXペディションをインド政府の大物が見に来る。 ★Subject: RE: [DX-NEWS] VU4 update 0130Z Dec 17 From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 07:32:18 +0000 Hello DXers from Andamans..... Here is another update.... 1. Saraha and the other ops have learned vy much over the past two weeks and send thanks to all callers for their patience. 2. Bharathi is a contact machine.... she is at the rig virtually all the time... She is calling when I hit the sack and was logging QSOs this morning when I woke up at dawn local. WOW. 3. Please be on ur best behavior in the coming days because some Big Wigs are coming to watch the ops (from India). Many levels of the India government are aware of this operation and it is doing great things for ham radio in all of India. I predict many youngsters will get VU licenses because of the interest this DXpedition has generated. The most powerful person in India today (I am told) is VU2SON who probably helped get this op going now. 4. We have a nice 80m dipole and are looking what to take down to put this up high on the Hotel. Maybe by tomorrow. We have dipoles--inverted Vs--- for all bands and now two beams up, so if a 15 m dipole has to come down for 80m, there is no real loss in operating flexibility. 5. NN6EE has pledged a 15 band pass filter.... a 20m is sorely needed.... hint, hint !!! 6. I will again gently recommend a trial transmission freq of 14. 140 + - ... listening way up... in order to make the USA freq police violate their sub band allocation in order to jam the VU4.... maybe this will be done.... maybe not. 7. More 40m operation is on the agenda this coming week and Daily DX sez prop shoud peak in the next 2 wks.... hope so. 8. Why do the operators stop xmissions suddenly? (a)Because the power went off (b)someone came into the shack with --food---questions---other stuff. (c) Something has to be repaired/replaced/installed right now. 9. Why do ops change freqs suddenly? (a) they mistakenly think this will thin the pile (b) someone reached over and hit the vfo (c) wind changed the beam direction and the rig stopped loading on that freq. 10 Why don't they stay on one freq? THERE ARE MULTIPLE NOISES AND WEIRD SIGS THAT POP UP AND DOWN over here and yesterday's freq is today's impossible jam up, etc. 11. Remember, Bharathi will be here to the end of December.... keep trying. Thanks to all for the great encouraging messages... all passed to the operators (when I can get them to break away from the headphones). 73 Charles Harpole <k4vudあhotmail.com> --(12月16日)------------------------------------------------------------------------- K4VUD からのEメールによりますと、今日の午前も VU4RBI が 21 SSB バンドで JA局を中心に 100 QSO (by CW) 以上こなしたようです。 ★Subject: [DX-NEWS] VU4 update 0530Z Dec 16 From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Thu, 16 Dec 2004 05:47:01 +0000 Hello DXers.... Here is my VU4 update Dec 16 at 0530Z. 1. The SteppIR 2 el beam arrived and we put it together. Tested at 10 feet and it works. ... it will go up higher at the Port Blair Science Museum today. I hv relayed the advantage of long and short path switching of this ant. to operators here. Thanks to the donor!!! 2. One or two more beams are due here today. 3. We still need band pass filters for 40, 20 and 15.... will allow one aditional station to get on and that one is likely to be all CW. If someone can donate or LOAN one or more of these filters, please mail them fast mail. Items are arriving here without diversions (altho the duty is stiff sometimes). 4. VU4RBI did over 100 CW contacts this morning (local time) on 15m during operning to JA. 5. Everyone here knows about the vast need for VU4 to stateside.... the windows are about 1 hr. long these days. I have put in the plea to all ops to call NA during the path openings. We are trying. 6. No one here has the time nor the inclination to search the log books for individual call signs. Please do not ask. The log books are in three locations and there must be two dozen of them by now. 7. Also, please do not send me any more advice about when VU4 should get on and what band. I am FULL of propagation advice, please understand. All ops are --to one degree or another- aware of the paths and the needs. Other stuff.... The temp here is tropical , mild and slight breeze. The Sinclairs Hotel is lovely with breathtaking ocean views and Bharathi has that view with every daytime contact. Nights are vy mild. Lots of veggy food and tea. Bharathi's op position is on a top floor with the beams and several dipoles directly overhead. She left her hotel room only once since arrival and that was for only an hour. I do not know when she sleeps or eats... She is really on the air every minute and is very clear and definite in her directions to callers. A great operator who is also vy kind to everyone. Many studnets from local college have come by to watch and also to hold guy ropes from time to time. I have gotten several hours of video and rolls and rolls of photos ... other than the ham operations, every where u look is another great photo view. I've talked to several people on the phone from different parts of the US and received many inquires about what is going on with the DX- pedition. Conditions have not been that bad over the last three or four days. Looking at the long range forecast it looks like things aren't going to get any better or worse, unless we get some kind of an unexpected disturbance. PY7ZZ, Fred, who made the first QSO with VU4RBI, spoke to VU3RSB, Sara, who was operating the VU4NRO station. Here are some details that were given. The VU4 DXpedition will be putting up the beam on Sunday. Up until now they have been using inverted V wire antennas. In the first two days of operations they managed 4,000 QSOs. At the moment the priority is SSB and in a few days there will be more CW activity. Digital mode activity will start up on Monday December 6th. Sara reminded everyone that the group will be on all bands and modes. The team is operating three stations from three different locations and they have five operators. They do have plans to put their logs on-line, no details were supplied as to where or when they might be available. Their plan is to have VU4NRO up on 14265 (possible long path) most of the time and VU4RBI will stay on 14190. On 15 meters they mentioned 21241 and that is where Fred worked them Saturday around 1100Z via the long path. Sara also added the temperature at Port Blair is around 42 degrees Celsius (that's about 108 Fahrenheit)! Some have asked about the calls with the portable sign and three letters afterwards. That is the suffix of the operator. For example VU4RBI/DBP. That just means the operator is VU2DBP. In the first 48 hours they had a least one transmitter on the air around the clock. The W6's, W7's and VE7's seem to have the best propagation, at least over the first two days. They seem to have a good window on 40 meters CW along with the W5's and W0's around 1300 to 1400Z. The W6's and W7's also have a good window on 20 meters around 0100Z and again at 1600 to 2000Z. W1-W4, W8 and W9 seem to have a window on 20 meters between 2000 and 2200Z. The VU4 Website (www.niar.org) suggests the following frequencies: 7060, 14190, 14208, 21240, 21260 They have been reported mostly on 7006, 14005, 14190, 14201-14208, 14245, 14265 and 21241. If I get any more information I will post it as it becomes available. For now please continue to have patience. The operators at VU4 know how rare the Andamans are and are doing the best they can with what they have. Also Dec. is good propagation and it was better to grab the government permits just as soon as the ink was dry and use the permission NOW. WFWL becomes Operate Now, Enjoy Now. -The Andaman Islands belong to India but are located close to Burma and Thailand in the Indian Ocean. During my visit there 3 yrs ago, the beaches were wonderful with no people and no trash. The diving is super. The hotels were mostly empty. The tourist stuff includes a super velodrome (bicycle races) and the Celluar Jail museum. Prices are not too bad, cheaper than VU7. -VU4 permit is December 3 to 31, 2004. From: "Charles Harpole K4VUD" Date: Fri, 19 Nov 2004 17:31:24 +0000 QST: VU2RBI, Bharathi, just notified me (Nov. 19, noon EST) that she now has in her hand all permissions necessary to do a legal operation on Andaman. The permission allows the following hams to transmit from VU4---VU2: RBI, DBP, MYH, RSB, and DVS, only. The permit period is for December 3, 2004 to December 31, 2004. Any and all donations that come to me will be completely used to assist this DXpedition via the National Institute of Amateur Radio in India, the umbrella sponsoring agency who, BTW, is allowed to receive foreign funds. Charles Harpole, VU3CHE, 3100 N. Hwy. 426, Geneva, FL 32732 USA. This is truly an exciting moment for ham radio DXing, activating an entity silent for about 17 years. Please be on your best on-air behavior when calling. We want to show ham radio to the India government and the world regulatory bodies that we are a discip- lined and worth while activity, fully deserving of precious spectrum space. There are no firm answers yet as to what bands/modes nor what rigs/antennas. This DXped- ition is not a mass group of crack operators arriving with tons of gear. However, there is some possibility of a continuing re-newal of permits to VU4 by many India hams, thus, we have the hope of more contact opportunities in the future. Warm up the rigs ... here we go ! 73, Charles Harpole <k4vudあhotmail.com> --(11月19日)------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charly K4VUD からは前回、寄付金は自分宛に送るな、と云っていたのが、自分宛でも NIAR へ 直接でも良い、と訂正しました。 ★Subject: [DX-CHAT] More on VU4 donations From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 13:20:05 +0000 Nov. 18-- Today, I received official authorization from the National Institute of Amate- ur Radio of India (NIAR) to act as a collection point for donations to the upcoming VU4 DXpedition. Therefore, I can again receive and relay donations to Mrs. Bharathi via the NIAR. I am very much want my part in this to maintain full accountablity of donations and feel that is now in place. Ordinary India citizens can not receive foreign money, but NIAR, as an organization, can do so. So donations can come to me or directly to NIAR. Please watch for an email message on this reflector later today from both Bharathi and from the NIAR officials which will have full donation details and addresses. Thanks for your patience. This DXpedition is happening rapidly. I sure can't wait to hear a VU4 call on the air..... 73, Charles Harpole (also VU3CHE), <k4vudあhotmail.com> --(11月16日)------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charly K4VUD は、DXペディの支援のため、是非寄付をお願いしたい。 ★Subject: [DX-CHAT] More VU4 news NEW address From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 13:01:33 +0000 TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS, Nov. 15, 2004: VU2RBI, Bharathi, has informed me that she is working with the National Institute of Amateur Radio of India now in her efforts to do a DXpedition to VU4. Good DX to all and 73, Charles Harpole, <k4vudあhotmail.com> --(2004年11月13,14日)---------------------------------------------------------------- Charly K4VUD が 1ヶ月前に 2人のインドのハムが別々に、当局に対しアンダマン諸島からの運用 許可の申請を働きかけている、述べていましたが、今回の情報だと Bharathi Prasad, VU2RBI が 数日以内に公式許可を得て 12月1日頃に同島に行くと伝えています。 QTH: 11.40'N / 092.46'E。 【2/2】Subject: [DX-NEWS] More about VU4 DXpedition From: "Charles Harpole" <k4vudあhotmail.com> Date: Sat, 13 Nov 2004 10:10:02 +0000 QST: VU2RBI, Bharathi Prasad, has appealed to VU2SON for help in getting permission to do a legal operation on VU4. She has asked for a month-long operating permission this December. Only native citizens of India are allowed to operate. Bharathi and her family are of modest means. She does not have any money of her own to invest in this DXpedition. India culture indicates a proper married woman only travel with her hus- band, VU2DBP. She led the 1978 DXpedition to VU4. Please do not complicate matters by now making your own request to op. on VU4. Please allow Bharathi to work her magic for now. In a year, if we all behave and have patience, Andaman could be much more open to ham radio visits or an on-going presence. The DX community needs to understand that this VU4 DXpedition is likely to start as a "mighty lite" for the reasons cited above. This is a PILOT project to prove ham radio is harmless on VU4. That is the immediate goal. Later, we hope to establish a long-term ham radio presence at a school in Port Blair. This effort will NOT be a mass arrival of crack operators with tons of gear. We appeal to the generousity, understanding, and patience of the world wide DX community. Please remember this is AMATEUR radio in a Developing Nation, and please give Bharathi's effort your patient support for this evolving project. Personally, I know how important a contact with VU4 is. The pent-up demand is huge. However, I appeal to all DXers to realize the delicate nature of getting permission, of quickly mounting this pilot effort, and of finding funds now. In American slang, "please cut some slack" to this project and know that Bharathi and I are in this for the long haul so that ham radio can later establish a continuing presence there to answer the needs for all bands and all modes. ALL donations will be promptly refunded should this effort not go as announced. QSL card requests will go to a USA address for mail security. Please consider a donation via USA check or international money order or equivalent to: Charles Harpole, 3100 N. Hwy. 426, Geneva, FL 32732-9761, USA. She has planned to arrive in the capitol there, Port Blair, on or about December 1, 2004. This is very short notice to obtain funding help from the ham community. I am now urgently seeking donations of any amount to fund the basic costs of this DX- pedition. In the unlikely event that the trip does not happen in a timely manner, ALL donations will be fully refunded to the donors. Full keeping of donor records and add- resses and amounts will be carried out. NCDX Foundation request has also been made but time is very short. Please feel free to relay this urgent message to all hams world-wide by any means. Donations in US Dollar amounts via personal check or international postal money order or equivalent should be made out to and mailed to: Charles Harpole, 3100 N. Hwy. 426, Geneva, FL 32732-9761, USA.
